MISSION AND VISION OF TEXAS IDA

The MISSION of Texas Section of the International Dark-sky Association (Texas IDA), is to communicate statewide with the Texas members of I.D.A. and with other interested individuals to spread the word about Light Pollution and how to reduce it in Texas, in order to preserve the beauty of the nighttime environment and to restore our heritage of the dark sky through quality outdoor lighting.

Our VISION is that during the first half of this century, the dark sky environment will again be visible in or near our towns and cities and people will be able to see the Milky Way galaxy when standing above the downwardly-aimed artificial light or in urban Dark Sky Preserves. Individuals, businesses, governments and institutions will see significant energy savings due to reduced wattage and usage time. Reduced glare, light trespass, and sky-glow will improve safety, security and nighttime use and enjoyment of property.

Members benefit from tax deductions, have special rules on lobbying, all the while maintaining confidentiality.

North America At Night: An Illustration of the Problem

Earth at Night. Copyright: DMSP and NASA http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap001127.html

The Earth at Night picture is an excellent illustration of the work that we are up against. While it makes for a stunning view, it clearly shows how widespread light pollution is and how the dark areas that once dominated the United States are slowly disappearing. If you notice, some of the darkest areas in the country are located here in West Texas where towns are remote and isolated. When you look at this photograph, just remember that every pixel of light is wasted energy that should be directed down to the ground.

STOP LIGHT POLLUTION: SAVE ENERGY, IMPROVE SAFETY AND SECURITY, PROTECT PLANT AND ANIMAL CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS AND RESTORE THE BEAUTY OF THE NIGHT—OUR HERITAGE!
